Leonardo, Michelangelo, and the Art of the Figure (HB)
The historic event at the heart of Michael Cole’s book Leonardo, Michelangelo, and the Art of the Figure took place at the dawn of the 16th Century, when the Florentine government set up a formal competition between Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo Buonarroti to paint the frescos of the City Hall. While Leonardo chose to paint The Battle of Anghiari, a skirmish between the forces of Milan and those of the Italian League led by the Republic of Florence in 1440; Michelangelo picked The Battle of Cascina as his subject, a battle between Florence and Pisa in 1364.
Though the original designs were obliterated, the book traces back to a time when the Renaissance masters worked alongside each other to create masterpieces that surpassed their previous works of art. This lucid and though-provoking book provides a whole new understanding of the influence of both these artists that would become visible in the works of subsequent generations of artists.
