Turner’s Modern and Ancient Ports Passages
Britain's national treasure, Joseph Mallord Turner (1775-1851) is renowned as master of light and water in his endless, natural landscapes. During the mid-1820s, Turner unveiled two significant paintings of sea ports: Cologne and Dieppe, now displayed in the Frick Collection, New York. These two pieces were controversial in their unconventional use of paint, their eery bright and yellow tones that signalled a shift in the artist's career towards romantic visions.
With focus on these two monumental works, this book provides in-depth discussions on the mid-years of Turner's career, situated in the context of socio-economic developments in Britain. Senior curator, Susan Grace Galassi, provides new scholarship whilst drawing on travel accounts, contemporary criticism and technical studies amongst glorious illustrations.
