What Makes a Masterpiece: Artists, Writers, and Curators on the World's Greatest Art

Was: £24.95 £12.50

In this exploration of the idea of the masterpiece, over fifty world masterpieces, from cave paintings to Cézanne, are brought to life by internationally acclaimed writers, scholars and artists.

Many of the contributors are celebrated artists in their own right (Antony Gormley, Quentin Blake and Tom Phillips); others are popular writers (Philip Pullman, Germaine Greer); and many hold positions at well-known institutions, including the Prado, the Van Gogh Museum, the Louvre, the National Gallery and the Sapienza University.

Each masterwork is illustrated in full, and key details are selected and separately illustrated, alongside illuminating comparatives.

Christopher Dell studied Art History at the Courtauld Institute, London, specializing in 13th-century French Gothic architecture, and 17th-century Roman Baroque. He then went on to work at the National Gallery, the Architectural Association, and in art publishing.

Chris's interest in the occult and Hermetic traditions began as an undergraduate looking at 17th-century mysticism, including the work of Athanasius Kircher, and its relationship to architecture. Over the years this has grown to include subjects such as Freemasonry, the monstrous, global mythological traditions, and alternative visual traditions.

Today Chris splits his time between Amsterdam and Barcelona, and continues his investigations into mysticism, monsters, mythology and art history.
